We source our cotton from the Izmir region of Turkey. Izmir is known for having some of the highest quality fibers in the world. Our farmers and dexters (clothes dyers) are GOTS certified which ensures that all agricultural practices are in line with organic standards. 

We created our shipping boxes entirely out of recycled cardboard and natural dyes in order to reduce the environmental impact of buying online.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. It is internationally recognized as the toughest organic textile standard because it goes far beyond verifying the organic farming process to include every step of the manufacturing process. We chose to have all of Opok's products GOTS certified to give our consumers peace of mind that the earth, farmers, factory workers, and products are treated with the highest care, while eliminating toxins from our bodies.

In order to become GOTS certified, the entire manufacturing process must follow by these strict guidelines below:

Contain at least 95% organic fiber | Not be treated with bleach, formaldehyde or any other toxic substances | Be colored with nontoxic dyes | Be produced in a mill that enforces strict social and environmental standards, treating their employees and the earth with deep respect.

More chemical pesticides are used for cotton than for any other crop globally.  Not only are these pesticides extremely harmful for the farmers and the environment, but they are leaching into our bodies through skin contact from clothing.  Studies have shown that pesticides are present inside the cotton fibers after harvest, and that they cannot be washed out using a home washing machine even after +50 washes.  We recommend you buy only GOTS certified clothing to ensure there are no pesticides and other toxins in your clothing.

Formaldehyde is one of the many toxic chemicals found in most clothing.  The EPA has classified formaldehydes as a "probable human carcinogen." National Cancer Institute researchers have concluded that, based on data from studies in people and from lab research, exposure to formaldehyde may cause leukemia, particularly myeloid leukemia, in humans.  Long-term exposure to low levels in the air or on the skin can cause asthma-like respiratory problems and skin irritation such as dermatitis and itching.
